Actor
Michael Sheard (The Empire Strikes Back, and
Grange Hill’s Mr Bronson) will always
be the Favourite Friend Of Fab.
He arrived as a guest on the opening night of
the first Fab Café in Manchester on 28th
June 1998, and within minutes, he was working
the room, and charming the pants off everyone.
He supported Fab Café at the very beginning,
and would always turn up at our events free
of charge. Everyone was instantly Michael’s
”Chum”, you just had to be breathing
oxygen for him to accept you.
My fondest memory of him is at the 1st Birthday
party of Fab Café in Manchester, when,
seeing that the staff were preparing the buffet,
he insisted on sitting for hours buttering the
bread. I had to photograph this, just because
no-one would have believed me otherwise.
A typical Fab Café birthday party would
always include Michael Sheard hosting, working
the room, flogging everyone his latest book,
and leading the room in a session of singing,
which would inevitably end with “School’s
Out For Summer” – he was Mr Bronson
after all…
A Birthday Party at Fab Café with Michael
Sheard, was kind of similar to a Morecambe and
Wise Christmas Special – you knew exactly
what to expect, and it was a very comforting
experience.
The greatest compliment I could give to Michael,
is for me to wish that you all meet someone
like him. He made you feel like the world was
more Civilised, and more Friendly, than it really
is.
Michael sadly left us on the 31st August 2005,
our Parties, and the Sandwiches, will never
be quite the same…
